Website Directory

I've been thinking on if i would suggest this for the past 2 months because i didnt think it would be accepted like all the other suggestions i make... but i decided to at least give it a try..........

I was thinking you could use the portal feature, make a new one called "website directory", and make a website directory service.

Now you could make the page several different ways... but the way I was thinking it would be is to have a 100x100 image on the right side, then have the following information:website address, website description, website owner, creation date, type (type would include adoptables, forums, blogs, and so on...).

The service should be a permanent service that will cost alot like maybe 100-150BP. BUT!

To add on, right below all the other information, put a field called 'additional links' and for 50 extra BP, let members add additional links (up to like 5) to other pages of that website.


If you need an image of what it should look like, just way so and I'll make one right after school. gtg now.

I like the link directory idea.

But, why not make it a reciprocal link directory instead of paying BPs?

if it costs BP, AH gets more posts. with more posts, the website gets more popular and more members. with more members, the website showcase comes back sooner helping out my other suggestion.

There should be an option to choose from... I know how your idea works, so it was pointless to explain it. ( waste of time )

More back links is also a good thing & the other services pretty much got posting covered. Also, why would someone waste their BPs to get their link added to a new link directory? ( maybe a few active members here might use their BPs ) It's not like people would browse and click links ( some people might want to view the activity of the site ) , etc. They mostly do it for the back links so that Google can crawl the link from this forum.

One of those votes are from me, and guests are allowed to vote in polls. ( someone should really tell Joel about that )

But, this is a nice suggestion, but I just want it to have an option to choose how to submit links... ( pay BPs or offer a back link on the website )

But if it's permanent, how many sites can actually do this? There better be lots of slots and I don't thin permanent is a good idea

it'll be on a separate page. you can make more than one portal ya know. just making a table will allow unlimited amounts. Those who request it first just get an advantage because of them being at the top.

though I do see another problem. it being permanent would mean less people request it because their website wouldn't be anywhere near the top.

so new plan. make this go for a week with 4-5 slots and cost 75BP. it would be alot better then

So what you're saying is, allow advertising in the portal?

I'm saying make another portal then add a link on the navigation bar called "Directory". (if ya didnt know, you can go to the portal area in the ACP and create multiple portals)

Theoretically Speaking, Yes

it'll have alot of links unless you want to limit the service to 1 week instead of permanent and add only 5 slots

Easy fix : Place new links to the top & leave old links at the bottom.

yeah. just make them 1 week only and make there be 5 slots and cost about 50-60BP (even 75 was too much. it would be on a separate page that is all about advertising so not as much people would look there (Of course I'll be looking there often as it was my idea =D))

Frosverup, is it possible you give us a live demo of what you mean? So i can get this totally right.

I made an HTML page example. it shows what can be done if some info is unknown (just add "N/A"). remember, this can be customized to look alot different if you make it. probably need a slightly larger image and larger text size... then center it...

Hmm, okay. I still don't think advertising in the portal is such a great idea. I'll leave this open for opinions for 3 days.

i thought i said you could make other portals.... just go to the portal ACP page and make a new portal and name it 'website directory'. that simple

Not a bad idea, but to cimplicated.

Good idea, but I don't think it would work here as the Administrators aren't very technical so probably wouldn't be able to implement this very well. No offence to you Administrators, just my opinion.

To work as a directory probably we'd need a web of portals to act for each category, that would allow more exposition than keeping them in one, but it would be tedious to mantain. xD

It could also be done to choose one of the older submissions to be displayed somewhere in the main portal as an incentive to add their pages even if eventually it gets down for recent submissions.

I am not sure i get the idea, so I am just throwing ideas, hahah. xD

Yeah, it's definitely a good idea, just not the right one for this forum really.

I'm going to bring this into discussion in the staff board. I'm 50-50 on this idea.

I'll Archive this once the final decision is made.
