I think that depends on the forum skin, i had the same issues with my forum, but when i changed to another skin the whole thing was as it should be with the widgets.

Yeah, I should have mentioned that style did't work well with widgets when I finished.... sorry

probably my fault for not editing a theme that works with widgets.... that's one thing I forgot to check when I made that theme

I just changed themes, and now the widgets won't even appear.

the normal phpbb portals are actually good.... and i've never seen a mybb one so i can't really talk about that =/
